Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Laode Muhammad Syarif said in a discussion on Tuesday that the reclamation project in Jakarta Bay ought to be driven by the government, not private companies, in compliance with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s instruction earlier in April.
Laode said the President had told ministers that reclamation must comply with environmental, social and legal considerations. The President also requested the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), the Environment and Forestry Ministry, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry and the Transportation Ministry to review the reclamation project in Jakarta within six months.
“He also said port development in the Netherlands could be used as example but it had to be driven by the government, not private companies,” Laode said at the offices of the KPK in South Jakarta on Tuesday.
However, if the government follows the example of the Netherlands in the construction of Port Rotterdam, it must realize that state ownership of the port accounts for 70 percent while the rest is be owned by private companies.
Meanwhile, in Jakarta as previously stated by Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, based on the Bappenas regulation, the Jakarta administration will own 5 percent of the reclaimed land.
However, the city hopes to accrue more profit from the project by requesting developers to set aside 15 percent of the value of saleable land in the form of additional contributions to the administration
